Four of Warren County’s five incumbent election commissioners have filed qualifying papers with Chancery Clerk Donna Farris Hardy for the Nov. 8 general election with qualifying for the office set to close Monday at 5 p.m.
Incumbent commissioners Nancy Hale, District 1; Retha Simmons, District 2; Sara Carlson Dionne, District 5; and Debra Grayson, District 5; are the only candidates so far to qualify for the election. District 3 Commissioner Elva Smith-Tolliver, has not qualified.
The commissioners are elected by district to four-year terms, and by state law must file a petition with the chancery clerk signed by 50 registered voters in their district to qualify for the election.
“They are the only elected officials who do not qualify with the circuit clerk’s office, Circuit Clerk Jan Hyland Daigre said. “By state law, they must present their petition to the clerk of the board of supervisors, which is the chancery clerk, who then transfers the petitions to the circuit clerk after qualifying closes.”
Election commissioners conduct the county’s general and special elections, and enforce state election laws.
Their duties include preparing and printing ballots, hiring and train poll workers, getting supplies and prepare voting machines for elections, prepare poll books, record and total and certify election results. They also provide election data to the public and purge voter rolls in compliance with the National Voters Rights Act.
