Southern Cultural offers two different camps

The Southern Cultural Heritage Center will host two different camps in the coming weeks for children who like art, singing, drama and games.
Multicultural Arts Camp is from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17. Registration is $50, which includes supplies, materials and snacks. Karen Biedenharn will be the art instructor and Christie Hurley Beasley will be the music instructor.
“By studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts, students will learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others,” SCHF executive director Stacey Massey said.
Each year, the campers study three countries’ cultures and learn about their history, geography, art, dance, music and food. India, Australia and Brazil are the three countries being studied at the camp this year.
“Half the day they’ll do art from those countries and the other half the day they’ll work on a musical production,” Biedenharn said.
The children’s daily snack will also feature each country.
“They get a taste of that country,” Biedenharn said. “Something that is a common snack from there.”
This year Beirdenharn said current events from the countries will also be incorporated into the camp, and one of the reasons Brazil was chosen is because it is hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics. India will be the focus of the theatrical part of camp with students learning about Bollywood— the Indian movie industry. For Australia they will look at aboriginal art.
“It’s just to give them a more current view of those countries,” Biedenharn said.
Campers will give a performance on the stage of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center auditorium and an exhibit of their artwork will be on display at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17. The production will include a few songs, dances and costumes. Family and friends are invited to witness what the children learned during their time at camp.
“The parents get to see everything that they were involved in and they get to show off a little bit,” Biedenharn said.
Cre.Activity Summer Camp For Kids is a new camp at the SCHC this year. It will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, June 20 through Friday, June 24. Snacks will be provided. Biedenharn will be the art instructor and her husband Herman will be the physical education instructor, both are certified teachers.
“During this camp children will split their time between art and activities,” Massey said.
The Biedenharn’s wanted to get children moving and exercising. She said this is more of a traditional camp for children who don’t feel comfortable at an overnight camp.
“We’re trying to kind of answer a need,” Biedenharn said.
Instead of cultural art, students will make more fun and crafty pieces using crushed cans and toilet paper rolls. The activities will be a little more out of the box with games like snowball volleyball — where children throw paper balls over a volleyball net — and yard darts — with hoola hoops and balls.
Any teenagers willing to volunteer are welcome to join and earn service hours.
Both camps are for children ages 6 to 12, or first through sixth grade. Children will be broken up into smaller group based on their age.
Registration is $50. Each camp has 60 total spaces available, and there are about 30 spaces left in each at this time.
The deadline to register for Multicultural Arts Camp is Friday, June 10. The deadline to register for Cre.Activity Summer Camp For Kids is Friday, June 17.
