Vicksburg residents who have junk and old building materials lying about their home have a chance to get rid of it Saturday during a Dumpster Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. co-sponsored by the city of Vicksburg and Waste Management.

Four large Waste Management roll-off dumpsters will be located at four sites in the city: the Warren Central Junior High School parking lot on Rosa A. Temple Drive (formerly Baldwin Ferry Road); the Halls Ferry Park parking lot near the tennis courts; North Washington Street at Pittman Road; and U.S. 61 South and Airport Road.

City employees will be at each site to oversee disposing of the trash. Paint, appliances or equipment with freon, old gas tanks, batteries, computers/monitors, televisions, fax machines fluorescent bulbs, any type of oil, or other hazardous materials will not be accepted.

Tires will be accepted and picked up by Warren County.

The day comes on the heels of Warren County’s Hazardous Waste Day held June 11.

“I hope the citizens of Vicksburg will take advantage of this to clean out their homes and get rid of any trash they see lying about,” North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield said. Mayfield is one of the coordinators of the event for the city. He said any elderly people who need help collecting trash and taking it to a dumpsite can call him at his office at 601-631-3770 or 601-831-0959.

“A lot of people turned out for the county’s hazardous waste program, and we decided to do this as a follow-up to give people the opportunity to finish getting rid of the stuff they missed last week,” Mayfield said. “We decided to do it back-to-back to help clean up the city for the holidays.”
