The Vicksburg National Military Park along with the Vicksburg Main Street Program and the City of Vicksburg are welcoming the National Park Centennial Band to town Sunday.
The free concert is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Catfish Row Art Park.
“It’s going to be a really special concert so come out and join us,” park superintendent Bill Justice said. “It’s free so the price is right.”
The performing jazz band is made up of musicians from New Orleans and park rangers from the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.
“They focus on the historical roots of jazz,” ranger David Slay said. “They are accomplished musicians. These guys are really good. It’s a real treat.”
The park will also have cannon fire at Tour Stop 1 Battery De Golyer Saturday, Sunday and Monday every hour except noon between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to remember the 153rd anniversary of the surrender of Vicksburg by General John C. Pemberton to General Ulysses S. Grant.
“It’s the commemoration of the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863,” Slay said.
Along with the firing of the cannon detachment, rangers will also supply educational information.
“We’ll have a ranger talk explaining the significance of the fourth,” Slay said. “We’ll do a cannon drill and explain stuff about the cannons.”
He said the weekend of the Fourth of July is one of the busiest of the year.
