A Vicksburg woman was killed Thursday night when the car in which she was a passenger collided with another car on Mississippi 27 about half-mile south of its intersection with Warriors Trail, Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Henry said.
He said Marquita Scott, 33, was a passenger in a southbound Pontiac Bonneville and ejected when the car hit a northbound Chevrolet Malibu. Deputy Warren County deputy coroner Kelda Bailess said Scott was declared dead at the scene of the crash and the body was taken to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
The accident occurred about 9:50 p.m. Thursday when the Pontiac in which Scott was a passenger crossed over into the northbound lane and collided with the Malibu. The Pontiac left the road and overturned several times. The other two people in the car with Scott, who were not identified, were taken to Merit Health River Region Medical Center. The two people in the Malibu were also taken to River Region. They were also not identified.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies arriving at the scene of the collision said witnesses reported the driver of the Pontiac ran from the scene after the collision, and a few minutes later dispatchers received a call from someone on Warriors Trail about a man walking through their yard.
Pace and deputies Ray Thompson and Vincent Montalbano went to the Warriors Trail area, where the man identified by witnesses as the driver, ran in front of their car on Warriors Trail. He was later found hiding in bushes adjacent to a fence near the road.
The man was returned to troopers working the accident, but no charges have been filed at this time. The accident remains under investigation.
