Sunday deliveries come to Vicksburg

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail — nor day of the week — shall keep the postal workers from their appointed rounds.
The U.S. Postal Service in Vicksburg will now deliver Amazon Prime parcels on Sundays.
“It’s for the Amazon Prime customers when they request Sunday delivery. Amazon has a truck that brings it directly to us, and we deliver it on the same day,” postmaster Bill Farrior said.
He said Vicksburg is one of eight locations in Mississippi, including Columbus, Brandon and Jackson, now delivering Amazon parcels on Sundays.
“It’s done all over the country,” Farrior said. “We had 73 places that did it in Alabama.”
Today marks the fourth Sunday parcels have been delivered by the postal workers, and Vicksburg is averaging 250 delivers each Sunday.
“They don’t really set it up unless they know you’re going to get the volume to justify it,” Farrior said. “It’s the bigger towns in Mississippi that are doing it.”
He said this is a permanent change, and he doesn’t see these deliveries stopping anytime soon because the service has benefitted customers.
“I don’t think it would go back. We’re getting sufficient volume to serve our customer. I don’t foresee it going back unless the orders at Amazon drop off a lot,” he said.
There has been some concern in the community with people seeing postal trucks out on a Sunday and reporting the trucks stolen to Farrior.
“I’m getting some calls from customers thinking people have stolen our trucks,” he said.
He said even in rural areas, all Amazon parcel deliveries would be made in the postal service trucks and not in personal vehicles.
“Don’t panic if you see one of our trucks,” Farrior said.
He said only Amazon parcels, and no mail, would be delivered on Sunday.
