Four Porter’s Chapel Academy students were injured when the pickup they were in ran off U.S. 61 South between Walmart and the Interstate 20 west and east entrance ramps about 1:30 p.m., Vicksburg police said.

Officer Judson Magloire said Michael Brewer, the driver of the truck, and passengers Leon Simms, Robi Riggin and Brandon Brister were taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center. Riggin was in critical condition, while Brewer and Brister were in good condition, a UMMC spokesperson said.

Simms was initially taken to Merit Health River Region and then transferred to UMMC. He was later transferred to Blair Batson Children’s Hospital, an official with River Region said. He was in serious condition, a UMMC spokesperson said.

All four play football for Porter’s Chapel.

Porter’s Chapel athletic director Wade Patrick said the school was withholding any comments until they learned more about the boys’ conditions.

“We want to wait until we get a full report on all of them,” he said. “We’re asking for prayers; we need them from the community and the school. They are in good shape, but they still need prayers for a full recovery for any injuries they might have.

Magloire said the four were returning from a funeral in Port Gibson and headed northbound on U.S. 61 South on the I-20 entrance ramp when Brewer lost control of the truck because of the wet surface. The truck left the road, went into the highway median and struck a magnolia tree. The impact caused the pickup to wrap around the tree, later forcing police and firefighters to use two wreckers to pull the truck from around the tree so they could remove Brewer from the truck using the Jaws of Life.

The accident remains under investigation.
