County rescinds ferry bid

It’s back to the drawing board for bids for repairs, improvements and maintenance to the Kings Point Island ferry.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors recently accepted a bid from Big River Shipbuilders of Vicksburg to handle that work, but rescinded the awarding of that bid on Monday morning after supervisors learned the company isn’t able to complete the work in the timeframe necessary.

John McKee, county engineer, told supervisors he was informed by officials from the company that fabrication of necessary parts for the ferry would take 20 to 25 weeks.

That amount of time would put the ferry out of service during some of its peak seasons, McKee said.

The island is made up primarily of hunting camps and tree farming operations.

“Turkey season is in the spring. Deer season begins in September. So the time we need to do this work is in the summer time,” he said. Those planning to hunt on the island in the fall are traveling there now to prepare food plots and make other arrangements for hunting season, McKee said.

Loggers and others involved in tree farming also use the ferry, which operates from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Warren County maintains the ferry, which has provided the only access to the island, which was cut off from the mainland when the Yazoo Diversion Canal was built in 1903.

“There may be some private ferries that can take you over, and there may be something on the north end, but this is the only public way to get over there,” McKee said.
