STARKVILLE — In what it termed an effort to increase fan safety, Mississippi State will implement a “clear bag” policy at Davis Wade Stadium for the 2016 football season.

Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or one-gallon plastic freezer bags, will be allowed in the stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches will be permitted.

Spectators also will be able to carry other items allowed into the stadium such as binoculars, cameras, and smart phones, but their cases will not be permitted.

Each ticketed fan will be allowed to bring only one clear bag into the venue and a small clutch.

Briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, computer bags, diaper bags, camera bags and non-approved seat cushions are all prohibited. The list of non-approved cushions include those with pockets, zippers, compartments or covers.

The policy, which takes effect for the Sept. 3 season-opener against South Alabama, is consistent with the NFL’s current model and is being adopted by most Southeastern Conference schools this season. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee and South Carolina have announced similar policies.

The new policy will expedite the entry process at Davis Wade Stadium, Mississippi State said in a release.

There will be express lanes at all four corners of Davis Wade Stadium, at Gates A, F, L and H, for fans who enter the stadium without bags.

For 2016 only, fans carrying bags that do not meet the approved criteria must have them inspected and tagged at Gates B or I.

In a release, Mississippi State said the policy “is designed to limit only the type of bags carried into Davis Wade Stadium,” and that fans may carry smaller items such as cellphones and keys in their pockets and jackets.

Fans are also allowed to carry in blankets, or binoculars and cameras without a case.
