Darnell brings in senior title

Jim Darnell was pretty average in the final round of the Warren County Senior Championship, but that was OK. He had been stellar on Saturday and rode the round of his life to the title.

Darnell shot a 73 on Saturday and a 79 on Sunday for a two-day total of 152 and a four-stroke win over Jeff Cowan at Clear Creek Golf Course.

“I just got lucky,” the 67-year-old said. “I had a good round (Saturday) and it held up.”

Cowan shot a 78 on Sunday to match his first-round score, and was the only one of the six golfers in the tournament within striking distance of Darnell. The two frontrunners were the only ones who broke 80 in the final round.

Hugh Hasty finished third, with a two-round total of 160.

Darnell, though, essentially won the tournament the day before. He made five birdies in the first round — two of them with long putts — and carried a five-shot lead to Sunday. He regressed back to his average in the last round, but still kept a comfortable lead throughout.

“Seventy-three was good,” he said. “That was beyond the realm of anything I had ever done before, and I’m 67 years old. I had never had five birdies in 18 holes.”

For the first time since 2008, there was no women’s tournament as part of the Warren County Championship. No one signed up to challenge three-time defending champion Karley Whittington, so the tournament was scrubbed.

The women’s tournament also was skipped in 2008, and had a long hiatus from 1998-2006.
