VCC closes in on Warren County Cup

For the past seven years, the only time the Warren County Cup has left the clubhouse at Clear Creek Golf Course was for the annual matches and trophy presentation right outside the front door.
It looks like it’s about to finally take a road trip inside the city limits.
The Vicksburg Country Club team ran the table in the alternate shot round Saturday to take a commanding 11-3 lead over Clear Creek in the Warren County Cup competition at VCC.
The VCC squad needs to win just 3 ½ points out of a possible 14 in Sunday’s match play round to win the Cup for the first time since 2008. The Ryder Cup-style competition between Warren County’s two golf clubs has been held each year since 1990. Clear Creek’s current seven-year winning streak is the longest in the series since the Country Club won the first seven Cup competitions from 1990-96.
The all-time series is tied 13-13.
Clear Creek got off to a fast start Saturday by winning the first three matches in the morning’s four-ball round. The Country Club won the next four — including dominant 4-and-3 and 6-and-5 wins, respectively, by the teams of Chris Whittington and Pierson Waring, and John Duett and Eddie Buckner — to take the lead heading into the afternoon.
The Country Club continued to pour it on in the second round of the day, posting the 7-0 sweep in alternate shot and needing only to avoid a complete collapse on Sunday to win the Cup.
