Clear Creek needed a dominant performance and a miracle comeback in Sunday’s match play round to keep the Warren County Cup in Bovina for another year.
The domination, though, was all on the side of Vicksburg Country Club.
VCC, which only needed to earn 3 ½ of a possible 14 points Sunday to win the Cup, won eight of 14 matches and halved four more to take a 21-7 victory in the two-day, Ryder Cup style event pitting Warren County’s two golf clubs.
The VCC squad won the Cup for the first time since 2008 by earning 17 of a possible 21 points in the alternate shot and match play rounds. Clear Creek’s only wins in match play were a 1-up win by Jordan Muirhead over Chris Sullivan, and Justin Stokes’ 5-and-4 win over Eddie Buckner.
Of VCC’s eight match play victories, only Matt Bell’s 1-up win over Kevin Neihaus went to the last hole. Louis Lambiotte had one of the biggest wins, 5-and-3 over Austin Neihaus, while Pierson Waring scored a 4-and-2 victory over Bob Davidson.
In a pairing of the VCC club champion and the Warren County champion, VCC’s Jeff Harpole beat Clear Creek’s Nick Mekus 3-and-2.
Vicksburg Country Club’s win on its home course ended its seven-year losing streak in the competition, which has been held annually since 1990. That matched the VCC’s run from 1990-96 for the longest streak in Warren County Cup history.
