Vicksburg has some new faces that were revealed this week.

On Friday, the River City Early College High School expanded its identity as the home of the blue and green cougars.

The new high school, which will offer 60 ninth graders the opportunity to either earn an associates degree, two years toward a bachelor’s degree or a two-year professional certification for free while obtaining their high school diploma, put their new mascot and colors to a vote. During the process, students worked in groups of five to create a presentation on possible mascots and colors, and were encouraged not to copy any regional collegiate teams and to be original from any area high schools.

“Some kids already had in their mind what they wanted. Some kids had no idea. So when they made their groups, we told them the first thing they had to do was decide on one within your group. It’s all about persuasive speaking. You have to win your group over to your idea,” guidance counselor Marian Richardson said.

Vicksburg Warren School District superintendent Chad Shealy spoke to the students after the big reveal Friday morning and commended them for their bravery leaving behind what they knew for the unknown of a new school.

• For 37 years, locals have frequented Shipley’s Donuts, but this week, business owner Becky Yelverton announced the family run business will now be Divine Donuts.

“I have just seen God’s hand all through this. I know this is his plan for us,” Yelverton said.

Other positive happenings this week:

• On Friday, Cannon Motors of Mississippi CEO Michael Joe Cannon, Gov. Phil Bryant and local elected officials officially broke ground on the new location for the Cannon Toyota of Vicksburg and Cannon Honda of Vicksburg dealerships, which will share a lot on North Frontage Road near RiverHills Bank.

• On Saturday, the Miss Mississippi Sendoff Celebration/Fashion Show/Trunk Show was held at the Vicksburg Auditorium.
