HATTIESBURG — Former Vicksburg High star D’Angelo Richardson is getting a chance to continue his college basketball career.

Richardson has signed with Southern Miss, the school announced Thursday. Richardson played the last two seasons at Holmes Community College. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 12.8 points per game and was also successful off the court, earning MACJC and NJCAA academic honors for holding a 3.6 GPA or better.

In high school, Richardson was the 2013 Vicksburg Post Player of the Year after leading Vicksburg High to the Class 5A championship game.

Richardson was one of five transfers Southern Miss added to the roster. It also brought in Tyree Griffin (Oklahoma State), Dominic Magee (Grand Canyon), Bilal Abdur-Rahim (Colby Community College) and Anfernee Hampton (Mississippi Gulf Coast).

Griffin started 15 games for Oklahoma State as a sophomore in 2015-16. The New Orleans native was fifth on the team in assists.

Magee was a four-star recruit out of Helen Cox High School in Harvey, La., and rated as the No. 2 prospect in Louisiana his senior year. He redshirted at Memphis as a freshman in 2014-15 before moving on to Grand Canyon.

Griffin and Magee will sit out the 2016-17 season per NCAA transfer rules.
