49ers release Vicksburg’s Price

Norman Price made the first cut for the San Francisco 49ers, but not the last.

The former Vicksburg High and Southern Miss offensive lineman was released by the 49ers on Saturday as NFL teams set their 53-man rosters ahead of next week’s season openers.

Price had signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May. He saw action in all four of the team’s preseason games, and survived the initial roster cut to 75 players early last week. The 49ers kept nine offensive lineman on their final 53-man roster, however, and Price was one of three that they released Saturday along with former Ole Miss tackle Fahn Cooper and Colin Kelly.

In all, the 49ers released 20 players on Saturday. The released players could still wind up on other rosters as teams begin combing the waiver wire Sunday. Some of them could also wind up back with the team as part of the 10-man practice squad.

Price’s release leaves New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler as the only Warren County player currently on an NFL roster. Butler is heading into his third season in the league and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2015.

Former Vicksburg High defensive back A.J. Stamps was released by the Cleveland Browns early in training camp to make room on the roster for wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was returning from a suspension.

Former Warren Central kicker and punter Devon Bell was waived by the Detroit Lions last week during the first wave of roster cuts.
