RAYMOND — For the second straight week, Hinds Community College took on one of the country’s best junior college football teams.

For the second straight week, Hinds came out on the short end of the stick.

No. 11 Itawamba Community College used a rough third quarter by Hinds to blow open a close game, and went on to win 45-20 Thursday night at Joe Renfroe Stadium.

Hinds (0-2) committed two turnovers, had a punt blocked, and missed a field goal in the third quarter. After trailing by eight points at halftime, it found itself behind 42-13 at the end of the period after Itawamba scored three touchdowns in 2 1/2 minutes.

Chris Long put Itawamba ahead 28-13 with a 6-yard touchdown reception from Dan Ellington with 6:55 left in the third quarter. Hinds went three-and-out, and Ellington hit Terry Williams for an 82-yard touchdown with 5:12 left.

Hinds then fumbled deep in its own territory on its next possession, and Ellington scored on an 8-yard run to make it 42-13 with 4:38 to go.

Ellington ran for three touchdowns, and completed 6 of 9 passes for 161 yards and two more TDs. Williams finish with four catches for 131 yards and a TD.

Itawamba finished with 509 yards of total offense. Hinds had 337.

It was the second straight week in which Hinds was routed at home by a top 20 team. They lost 40-17 to No. 6 Northwest Mississippi, the defending national champion, in last week’s season opener.

Stephen Guidry caught seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown for Hinds.

Former St. Aloysius star Demichael Harris scored his first college touchdown, on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.
