Clinton Christian tops PCA

Injuries and the Clinton Christian Warriors proved to be too much for Porters Chapel Academy on Friday night, as the Eagles lost 33-7. It’s PCA’s sixth straight loss this season, and 14th in a row dating back to last year.
“Offensively we were doing some things, moving the ball. We looked better. Again, injuries — we’re so depleted. What these guys are fighting and battling every week, I can’t say enough. We are down to next to nothing, and they just keep going. Eventually if they continue to do that, something good is going to happen,” PCA head coach Blake Purvis said.
More players were hurt in Friday’s game, adding to the injured list on a team that was already down eight starters going in.
“We lost three or four at least for the game. I feel like two or three of them may be out for next week too,” Purvis said.
Starting sophomore quarterback Jake Arias was taken out late after suffering cramps during the game, but said he planned to be back next week.
“We had eight starters out and we have to shuffle guys around. It’s been like that all year. We put people in positions they’re not used to,” Arias said. “I got a cramp and I’m not injured, but Brayden Ray was injured and I think he’s fine.”
The Eagles scored their lone touchdown just seconds before halftime. A personal foul on Clinton Christian had the Eagles starting the drive on the Warriors’ 48-yard line.
After a quarterback keeper by Arias, Clinton Christian had its second sideline warning of the night, resulting in a 5-yard penalty and a first down on the 37-yard line. Wade Dickard then ran 27 yards to the 10-yard line, and on the next down Garrett Hutchins ran it to the 1.
Brayden Ray ran the final yard to score for the Eagles with one second left on the clock, making it 20-7 at the half in favor of Clinton Christian.
The Eagles had a solid nine-play drive on their first possession of the third quarter, but were unable to convert it into points.
“We were firing off the football, and we were blocking — exactly what we have to do. We make a mental error down there and give up a couple yards and third-and-1 turns into fourth-and-4, and it just stalls the drive out,” Purvis said.
In the last three possessions of the night, the Eagles went to a straight passing game with senior Shelton Miller at quarterback, but were unable to get anything going. Miller is the third different PCA player to play quarterback this season.
“He was our backup. Our starter was getting banged up in there. We just made a switch to see if it could spark us a little bit, maybe help us throw the ball a little bit better,” Purvis said. “We were down and trying to put the ball in the end zone. We weren’t able to run very good toward the end of the game as we got tired so we tried to get the ball in space and work on our passing game.”
The Warriors’ first score of the night came when senior J.J. Hammond returned a punt 50 yards to the end zone with 2:25 left in the first quarter.
The Warriors then started the second quarter with a 12-play drive resulting in a 7-yard run by senior quarterback J.D. Morton for the touchdown, making it 14-0 with 4:50 left in the half.
On the Warriors’ next possession, they lost 10 yards on a first down running play to put them on their own 34. They bounced back on second down, as Morton hit Zachary Scott for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good, leaving the score at 20-0.
Any momentum the Eagles had by scoring at the end of the half was dashed when the Warriors scored on the first play of the third quarter. Hammond ran 60 yards for the touchdown to make it 27-7.
Dickard later fumbled and the Warriors recovered on the PCA 31-yard line. Six plays later, Hammond ran 3 yards for the final touchdown of the night and a 33-7 lead.
