Anniversaries were celebrated this week in Vicksburg.
On Thursday, The Friends of the Vicksburg National Park and Campaign held a Centennial Sunset Reception and fundraiser that drew more than 100 people paying $100 per person to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.
“The Friends of the Vicksburg National Military Parks & Campaign is our nonprofit partner,” park Superintendent Bill Justice said. “They help us a lot with programs like the annual (Memorial Day) concert. We are very fortunate to have them helping the park.”
On Friday, the Attic Gallery, located on Washington Street, celebrated its 45th anniversary during an art show entitled “Still Standing.”
“It (the theme) seemed to sum up our feelings about being able to continue doing what I love doing — bringing art and artists and people together in a very special place and sharing their energy and talent,” gallery owner Lesley Silver said.
More positive happenings in Vicksburg this week:
• Natalie Harris, a 14-year-old student at River City Early College, which is located on the Vicksburg Hinds Community College Campus, is collecting items for the toy closet at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, La. Harris was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) six years ago at Shriners. While there as a patient, Harris was able to visit the toy closet and now wants to pay it forward and is collecting items for teens.
• On Friday morning, the Vicksburg Police Department met with members of the community at local fast food restaurants over a cup of coffee to help bridge the gap between the public and law enforcement. All three local McDonald’s restaurants and Chick-fil-A hosted investigators and uniformed officers from the VPD from 8 to 10 a.m. and invited the public to join them for coffee in an effort to build relationships.
• The USS LST-325, a decommissioned tank landing ship of the United States Navy made its way to Vicksburg this week. The floating museum will be in town through today offering tours until 5 p.m.
