The volunteer musicians who comprise the Vicksburg Orchestral Society will present a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 900 South.
“The concert will include beloved favorites by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, French arranger Maurice Ravel, Austrian composer Johann Strauss, and Russian composers Alexander Borodin, Modest Moussorgsky and Sergei Prokofiev,” public relations director for the VOS David Rorick said.
“This is some of the most magnificent music,” VOS member Marie Cunningham said, “and I have waited all my life to play “Pictures in an Exhibition.”
Moussorgsky composed this suite of 10 pieces, she added.
Dr. Darcie Bishop, who is the principal trumpeter for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, will serve as conductor for the program.
Also, the VOS will accompany the VOS choir during the performance of Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances.
“I am excited that I am actually going to get to sing and play the flute for this performance,” Cunningham said.
Sunday’s event is free and following the concert a reception will be held in the church Parish Hall.
‘The orchestra is supported, in part, by Church of the Holy Trinity, and rehearses Tuesday evenings at the Church of the Holy Trinity Annex, located at 930 South St.,” Rorick said.
“New members are always welcome.” For more information about the VOS, call 601-638-4333.
