Will the real Tammy Wynette please stand up?

Purple rhinestones adorning Loretta Lynn, a red sequined gown showcasing Tammy Wynette’s curves, and a giant jellyfish — no, it’s not just a vivid dream.

It was an especially colorful Halloween party which included Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, vintage Dolly Parton, a cowboy, and even the Homecoming Queen complete with corsage, crown and sash. A costume party is a special time when friends of all ages can put aside being grown-up for one night of playing dress-up. It’s just like when we were all kids, but with a little more money to spend on better costumes.

So, I put out my glittered pumpkins alongside Mama’s favorite orange punch, strung spooky lights in inconvenient places, and polished the wine glasses for our Halloween Hoedown. It advertised and lived up to a country and western theme with bales of hay surrounding the fire pit in the backyard, hosted by my Chris, who was transformed into the First Lady of Country Music, Miss Tammy Wynette, and yours truly as Loretta.

You’re darn tootin’ we had a downright kick-your-heels-up good time.

Miss Wynette performed for her fans in her sparkly red mermaid-style evening gown while this Coal Miner’s Daughter twirled around barefoot most of the night in her poufy lavender dress embossed with rhinestones. George Jones would have been proud, and Chris-Tammy was heard to say that Real-Tammy got it right when she said, “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman.”

I think it was the high heels one size too small he tried to wear for much of the evening.

Bob Ross was in the corner painting. The original Cat Woman was on the prowl. Maria from “The Sound of Music” dropped by, and Count Dracula sunk his fangs into the chips and dip. A fabulous frog and his beautiful princess made an appearance. Cast members from the hit series “Wentworth” were sighted, and we even had a scruffy plumber on call for emergencies.

June and Ward Cleaver, Frida Kahlo, Captain Jack Sparrow, Rainbow Brite, and Marilyn Monroe rounded out the list of celebrities spotted around the lighted jack-o’-lanterns.

It was a festive night of feathers and brightly-colored boas. I saw cowboy hats, false eyelashes, prison stripes, a kimono, red stilettos, and even a few of the traditional scary masks before the night was over. The Queen of Hearts took a selfie with the queens of country, and an adorable Waldo provided the keg of beer.

The day after the party, I swept sequins and hay off of my settees and rugs, and even found a can of extra hold hairspray beside someone’s walking stick while Chris-Tammy was in the kitchen busily washing wine glasses and grumbling such work was beneath his station. It was a fun night indeed, proving we are all just silly kids who never really want to grow up, even though Peter Pan was nowhere to be spotted.
