Warren Central’s girls’ basketball team hasn’t played up to its full potential yet, but it’s still perfect.
Dee Dee Caldwell scored 13 points and Aniya Sanders added 11 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Vikes dispatched Ridgeland 54-35 in their home opener on Tuesday night.
It was Warren Central’s fourth win in a row to start the season, with the first three coming against perennial state powers Callaway, Raymond and Hattiesburg. Tuesday’s modest point total was WC’s highest so far.
“We are playing acceptable in spite of the fact we don’t have a point guard,” Warren Central coach Jackie Glass said. “This is an opportunity to allow players to step up and make plays. It gives them valuable experience we will need down the road.”
The Lady Vikes have won their last two games without starting point guard T.T. Sims, who suffered a leg injury against Raymond last week. Glass said Sims will see a doctor Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury.
“I’m glad to see we are holding on. It gives me hope that we are going to be even tougher,” Glass said. “If all goes as I hope it will we will have our full squad back by January. If we stay healthy we will be hard to beat.”
Warren Central got the job done Tuesday with a balanced effort. Caldwell and Sanders were the only players in double figures, but three others scored at least seven points. De’Sha McGloster scored nine, Cocoa Fultz had eight and Kiara Lockhart seven.
Warren Central will play its next two games on the road, Thursday at Hazlehurst and next Tuesday at Jim Hill.
(B) Warren Central 47, Ridgeland 40
Duke Henyard scored 13 points to lead three Warren Central players in double figures as the Vikings (2-1) won their second straight game. Chavis Smith added 12 points for Warren Central and Chris Early scored 10.
(G) Vicksburg 48, Yazoo City 47
Vicksburg High (2-1) overcame a five-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to beat Yazoo City on Tuesday night.
Pleasure King had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and hit two layups following Yazoo City turnovers to key the comeback. After getting the lead with 1:34 left, the Missy Gators dribbled nearly a minute off the clock.
Kerricka McRunnells led the Missy Gators with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Eriel Bunch had six points and 14 rebounds.
Gabriella Campbell led Yazoo City with 25 points, and Destiny Henderson scored eight.
