Congrats to the Cubbies!

To the editor:

My all-time favorite baseball team was and will always be The Brooklyn Dodgers —first because they were a spectacularly democratic team (Hermanski was Polish, Furillo was Italian, Campanella was black and Italian, and Pee Wee was white and from Kentucky. Jackie, of course, was black.).

And secondly, because their losses were tragic Greek epics (Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca) and that evil pennant play-off! And because their one Series championship as “The Brooklyn Dodgers” was nothing if not Shakespearean because they never won it again!

I am a native Vicksburger transplanted in my youth to Chicago, where I and my beloved “Cubbies” spent most of the rest of our lives languishing near the rock-bottom “Pirates” in those old National League standings.

And then when I got old enough, to the “Billy Goat Inn” itself where I learned to lament with the best of them, all those hard-nosed Chicago reporters.

My friend, Joe Zelasco, is a transplanted Chicagoan living here for quite some time now. And sometime after Y2K hit the planet, he assured me that this next, new millennium was “ours!” Not to worry, he said. We had another 1,000 years!

Turns out we don’t need the other 984. We just needed that night!

So greetings, glad tidings to all friends and fans all out and around Waveland Avenue from all your transplanted, re-planted friends in Vicksburg, Mississippi!

I offered to do a polka with Joe. But he just gave me a hug!
