A group responsible for doing much good in Vicksburg recently turned 40 years old.

The Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. began its 40th anniversary celebration in November when it was honored with a proclamation from the Board of Mayor and Alderman for the community service its members have provided to Vicksburg and Warren County.

The Vicksburg chapter is part of a national group focused on community service. The sorority follows a five-point platform that includes economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health and political awareness and involvement. The Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter has been active in the community in a number of ways. Recently, the group was involved in voter registration. Over the years, activities have included blood drives, candidate forums, youth activities and fundraisers, the proceeds of which provide scholarships for Vicksburg and Warren County students, as well as support for international causes supported by the sorority as a whole.

This weekend, the chapter here will honor its 14 charter members with a private sisterhood luncheon. Three charter members of the group are still active today. However, two have passed away.

“We would not be able to do the work that we do without the support of the city of Vicksburg and Warren County, without the support of the citizens,” said Loretta Brantley, chapter president. “We’re going to continue to do the work that we’re doing, our community service work, to help to improve our community.”

The Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. deserves our community’s thanks. Congratulations on 40 years of making Vicksburg and Warren County a better place to live.
