STARKVILLE (AP) — Vandals defaced Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium early Saturday, spray painting a number of slogans supporting rival Ole Miss on walls, signs and sidewalks along the outside of the structure.

The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson reported the phrase “Go Rebs” was spray painted in red on top of a wall near the northwest gate. At other points along the stadium’s exterior, the phrases “Hotty Toddy,” #FailState” — a play on Mississippi State’s “HailState” slogan — and “HYDR” appeared in the same red paint.

Workers toiled to clean up the graffiti on Saturday afternoon. The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson reported neither Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen nor director of communications Sid Salter had any comment regarding the incident. University police also declined to comment.

There are security cameras in a number of places around the stadium.

Other areas of campus, including Dudy Noble Field and Humphrey Coliseum, appeared to be free of graffity, the Clarion-Ledger reported.

Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork condemned the vandalism in a Twitter post on Saturday.

“It’s unacceptable on every level & hope they catch whoever did it. Not sure we could be more clear,” Bjork tweeted.

The vandalism came as Mississippi State’s football team was preparing to leave campus and head to Florida for the St. Petersburg Bowl. The Bulldogs will play Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 26.

The Bulldogs held nine practices in Starkville — the last on Saturday morning — and will take four days off before resuming practice in Florida on Thursday.

Coach Dan Mullen wants his team to be able to enjoy as much of the bowl experience as possible when they touch down in St. Petersburg next week, so he tried to install as much of the game plan as possible over the last four days.

“When you get down to the bowl site there’s a lot that goes on,” Mullen said. “You’re in a new city and excited. You’re in a new practice facility and new meeting facility. We’ll have a beach day and a Busch Gardens day and all kinds of activities so you want to make sure guys know and are confident in the game plan before you get there.”
