Brenda Kay (Jemerson) Jones, 67, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 20, 2016, at her home after battling a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, TJ and Mary Louise Jemerson.
Brenda was born March 3, 1949, in Vicksburg. She graduated from Cooper High School in Vicksburg and pursued a commercial arts degree at the Mississippi State College for Women. She later transferred to the University Medical Center in Jackson, where she received a BS degree in Nursing.
After graduation, Brenda was part of the nursing staff for the newly opened Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UMC in Jackson. While in nursing school, Brenda met her future husband, Dr. William B. Jones. They were married on June 24, 1973, and resided in Jackson.
After their third child was born, the family moved to Greenwood in 1977. After moving to Greenwood, Brenda became a member of the Junior Auxiliary and Delta Garden Clubs. This helped her develop her passion for gardening, flowers and floral design, leading her to start her own company, Brens’ for Special Occasions.
She specialized in weddings that had a unique and personal feel. Brenda also worked later at John Richards Collections as a floral designer. As a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Brenda and other parishioners developed a neighboring house site into an old English garden, which she maintained until her health declined.
She was quoted saying about the garden “I believe this is God’s garden because I can get things to grow here when I can’t get them to grow anywhere else!” Brenda was always found in the garden, whether at Church, her husband’s office, or at home. She became a Master Gardener. She loved to watch her design blossom and take shape.
Her interest in various plants and trees led many kids coming by asking questions and pulling leaves for their leaf collections. She often planted special trees or shrubs for this reason, giving the kids a unique leaf for their collection. She did all of this while raising four children and managing her husband’s practice.
Brenda’s artistic talents extended into painting, pottery and even ventured into smocking at one time. Despite all these artistic talents her most endearing quality was her love and compassion for others, especially her children and grandchildren to whom she gave tirelessly her time and energy. She never met anyone she didn’t like and was always willing to give her time to those around her as well.
Brenda is survived by her loving husband, William B. Jones; her children, Warren (Carley) Jones, Bret (Ashley) Jones, Chris (Katie) Jones and Reagan Jones; along with her grandchildren, Kaylee Jones, Grayson Jones, Brooklyn Bynum and Reese Jones, all of Greenwood; her sister, Toni (Danny) Koestler of Vicksburg, her sister-in-law, Madeline (Marty) Stroble of New Orleans; and her mother-in-law, Doris Jones of New Orleans.
Funeral Services will be at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Visitation will start Friday at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of choice. Wilson and Knight is in charge.
