Thanks to Entergy, air conditioners were able to run on Christmas day following a two-day power outage that followed a storm system, which passed through Warren County early Dec. 18.
Power was restored to 4,612 customers with more than 2,100 of those outages in an area south of I-20 along East Clay Street, North and South Frontage Road, U.S. 80 and Mississippi 27 served by Entergy’s Vicksburg East substation off Porter’s Chapel Road, which went out after a tree fell on a transmission line, knocking it into a ravine.
Christmas Day temperatures were in the upper 70’s making for a warmer than normal Christmas Holiday. Mark McAllister, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said Vicksburg could expect a high of around 75 on Christmas Day with partly sunny skies, and his prediction was accurate.
More positives this week in Vicksburg:
4 On Thursday, Vicksburg native and Country music recording artist William Michael Morgan performed for staff and residence at the Heritage House Nursing and Retirement Center.
Morgan was in town visiting friends and family during the holidays, and took time to perform a selection of traditional country tunes for a group of about 20 residents.
“He said he wanted to come by while he was in town and play some songs for the residents,” said his mother, Pam, who is a nurse at Heritage House. “I said, I’d asked them and see what we can come up with.”
“My mom and I were talking about it,” Morgan said. “I guess she put the idea in my head. But I like coming here. Everyone’s so happy everywhere I go, I see smiles. I’ve never seen an upside down smile.”
4 Josh Morgan was named the Vicksburg Post’s 2016 Coach of the Year award. It’s the third time Morgan has won it in his seven seasons as Warren Central’s head coach. He also got it in 2012 and 2015.
“It’s an honor that’s much appreciated, with the programs and the coaches in our area,” Morgan said. “It doesn’t get old, I can tell you that. I will gladly accept it on behalf of our coaching staff and all of our players.”
Morgan won a total of nine games in his first three seasons at Warren Central, but has since turned the program into a state championship contender.
Since the start of the 2013 season, the Vikings are 37-13 and have posted back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time since a three-year run from 1992-94.
