Mother Nature gave it a good try, but we made it through storm relatively unscathed

Mother Nature barreled down on locals this weekend with a cold weather front bringing a combination of rain, sleet and snow, but fortunately there were no serious incidences.

Conditions Friday night kept Vicksburg police and Warren County sheriff’s deputies busy working an estimated 63 automobile wrecks because of the slick roads.

Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officers worked about 40 wrecks across the city, including one involving an overturned 18-wheeler that rolled on Interstate 20 westbound near the Indiana exit.

“We had a busy day,” Armstrong said. “Not only working the wrecks, but with officers standing by blocking streets while the street department put slag on the roads. Fortunately, we had no injuries or deaths from the wrecks.”

Sheriff Martin Pace said his deputies worked 23 accidents, with six of those involving injuries, but none serious.

And despite the cold, icy conditions, a total of only 10 Warren County Entergy customers were without power at various times Friday and Saturday.

“We didn’t do bad at all,” said Entergy customer service representative Shelia McKinnis. “We did very well despite the heavy ice.”

More positives reported in Vicksburg this week:

• On Thursday, Braylen Greer scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on another, and goal keeper Chase Graham stopped a penalty kick as Warren Central beat Brandon 2-1 at Viking Stadium.

“The team played a great game,” Warren Central boys soccer coach Greg  Head said.

“We were missing two starters and they still played together and played well. It was awesome. You just have to listen to the guys talk to see how big a confidence boost it is. They were not going to let this one slip through their hands again.”
