This time, the Warren Central Lady Vikes were on the right side of a last-second shot against Clinton.

T.T. Sims scored 17 points, and Warren Central held on when Clinton’s last shot missed as time expired to beat the Lady Arrows 43-42 on Tuesday night.

Warren Central (20-5, 3-1 Division 4-6A) won its fifth consecutive game, with its last loss coming on a buzzer-beating shot against Clinton (17-8, 1-4) on Jan. 10. The Lady Vikes will play at Greenville on Friday in another division game.

This was also just the third win for Warren Central in the last 14 meetings with Clinton, a streak that dates back to 2012. The Lady Vikes have not won back-to-back games against the Lady Arrows since taking two in a row in 2010 and 2011. Four of the last seven meetings in the series have been decided by one or two points.

Despite the win, WC coach Jackie Martin-Glass said she saw plenty of room for improvement. After Sims, Dee Dee Caldwell was the only other WC player to score in double figures. She finished with 12 points. Chae White scored seven, and no one else had more than two.

“We didn’t execute and had too many turnovers. We need to refocus,” Martin-Glass said. “I’m glad we won, but I’m not happy with how we played. When we don’t get balanced scoring, we struggle, but that was the result of our poor execution.”

JaKayla Johnson led Clinton with nine points, while Aniya Wren-Daniel and Kiara Vance had eight apiece.

(B) Clinton 78, Warren Central 53

Alabama signee Galin Smith and Robert Davis scored 21 points apiece as Clinton’s boys team (18-6, 4-1 Division 4-6A) beat Warren Central (9-11, 1-3) for the sixth time in seven meetings.

Davis scored 14 points in the first half as the Arrows built a 39-22 lead at halftime. Smith, a 6-foot-9 center, took over after that by scoring 14 points in the second half.
Markel Palmer added 10 points for Clinton, while Jerrez Porter hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with nine.

Chavis Smith led Warren Central with 14 points. Raleigh Floyd scored 10 and DeAries Henyard had seven.

(B) St. Aloysius 61, Park Place 49

Senior Tyler Lewis scored a team-high 21 points on senior night, and St. Aloysius’ boys’ basketball team won its first district game of the season by beating Park Place (7-14, 1-9 District 3-AAA).

Jaylen Whitaker added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Flashes (8-11, 1-7), who held Park Place to 26 points in the last three quarters after allowing the Crusaders to score 23 in the first.

Josh Bennett scored 11 of his 14 points in the first quarter for Park Place and Tyler Martins led the team with a game-high 22 points.

James Trichell finished with eight points for St. Al and Antonio Thompson had eight rebounds.

“We started switching on some of their picks and hit the boards extremely well after that first quarter. Defensively, we stepped up,” St. Al coach Eddie Pickle said.

(G) Park Place 53, St. Al 37

The St. Aloysius Lady Flashes held a four-point lead after one quarter, but struggled in the second, fell behind by halftime, and lost to District 3-AAA rival Park Place on senior night Tuesday.

“We had some turnovers and they capitalized and hit some 3-pointers and had a big run in the second quarter,” St. Al coach Gary Post said.

St. Al will finish the regular season with road games at Riverfield Academy on Thursday night and Hartfield Academy on Monday, and then will play in the District 3-AAA tournament at Manchester Academy beginning Feb. 9.
