PORT GIBSON — William Shreve Guthrie Jr. of Port Gibson passed from this life at his home Feb. 9, 2017.

He is survived by his sons, Sherve Guthrie III (Irene) of Port Gibson, Vernon Guthrie Sr. (Lynda) of Knoxville, Tenn.; his daughter, Tirey Keaton (Kevin) of Port Gibson; grandchildren, Vernon Jr., Charles, Laura, Shreve IV and Janie; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Shreve Guthrie Sr. and Kate Herlitz Guthrie; sister, Sarah Humphreys Guthrie; and brother, Fred Preston Guthrie.

He was born in Port Gibson and graduated from Port Gibson High School in 1945. He then entered the U.S. Navy with his twin brother Fred, and they served together on a destroyer escort in the Pacific during the World War II era.

After a brief time in the Navy, he entered Louisiana State University, graduating in 1951.

After graduation, he returned to Port Gibson to participate in the family business — the Claiborne Hardware Company, where he became the owner of the hardware and furniture portions of the business and continued to work as long as his health enabled him.

He was married to Margaret Elizabeth “Jodie” Tiery on Dec. 27, 1952. They celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to Jodie’s death on July 18, 2015. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson, where he served as deacon and elder for many years.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael Herrin officiating. Interment will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood Funeral Home, and 10 a.m. Monday at the church, until the hour of the service.
