Finding a career path might be right outside the door for students in Vicksburg. On Friday, the fourth annual “Who Works the Rivers in Vicksburg” mini career fair will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
More than 100 students from all four local high schools and Hinds Community College will tour the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum and the Motor Vessel Mississippi IV located on Washington Street, and Ergon Marine and Industrial Supply on Lee Street.
Students will also have the opportunity to visit with human resource representatives from local river companies and organizations during the event to find out about the many river related career opportunities each of them have to offer.
Exhibitors at the career fair will include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seamen’s Church, U.S. Coast Guard, Yazoo River Towing, Golding Barge Line Inc., Yazoo River Towing, Big River Shipbuilders, Magnolia Marine and Hinds Community College, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District park ranger Kathy Mabry said.
“Who Works the River” is a RiverWorks Disocvery career awareness program, spokesperson for RWD Errin Howard said, and is a national outreach educational effort of the National Rivers Hall of Fame located at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa.
RWD was developed by the AEP River Operations, which is a commercial inland barge company delivering about 45 million tons of products annually and is supported by more than 150 funding partners that are in the river industry.
It was initiated in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 2011 and has since been implemented in 18 states around the country.
“RWD is a coordinated effort which brings together the for-profit industry, community leaders, museums, nature centers, educators, and the general public in recognition of the role our rivers have played and will continue to play in our nation’s future,” Howard said.
