NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Carlisle Koestler drew a tough assignment in his first start on the mound for Southeastern Louisiana.

The former Warren Central and Hinds Community College pitcher allowed four runs, only two earned, in five innings and took the loss for the Lions as they lost 4-2 to No. 10 Vanderbilt in the second game of a two-game midweek series in Nashville.

Koestler (0-1) gave up three hits and two walks, and struck out three. The sophomore right-hander had previously made two relief appearances without giving up a run.

Derrick Mount and Ryan Byers staked Koestler and the Lions to a 2-0 lead with solo home runs in the top of the second inning. Julian Infante homered for Vanderbilt (6-3) in the bottom half, however, and the Commodores tied it with an unearned run in the fourth.

J.J. Bleday touched Koestler for another solo home run in the fourth inning, and Ro Coleman reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 4-2.

Koestler left the game after the fifth inning, having thrown 82 pitches. Drew Avans went the rest of the way for the Lions (4-4) and pitched three scoreless innings.

For Vanderbilt, relief pitchers Paxton Stover, Matt McGarry and Reed Hayes combined to throw six hitless, scoreless innings. Stover (1-0) worked two innings and got the win, while Hayes pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

The two home runs in the second inning were the only hits Southeastern Louisiana had in the game. Vanderbilt finished with six hits.
