The Vicksburg Theatre Guild has begun preparing for their upcoming musical. Set designs are under way and discussions about costuming have started.
This year, VTG will present “Crazy for You” Aug. 4-6 and 10-13, but before the curtains rise, a cast must be selected.
Auditions are scheduled for 2 p.m. April 30 and at 6:30 p.m. May 1 at the Parkside Playhouse, 101 Iowa Ave.
The show’s director, Paul Ballard, said because the musical has many dance numbers, he is encouraging all interested dancers to come try-out.
“If you can’t sing, but you can dance, come try-out,” he said.
Winning a Tony Award in 1992 for Best Musical, “Crazy For You” is described as a classic tale of a boy, a girl, and a theater in need of salvation.
George Gershwin composed the musical numbers for the show with lyrics written by his brother, Ira.
“One of the most famous Broadway tunes of all time in the musical is ‘I’ve Got Rhythm,’” Jon Brame said.
Brame will be serving as the musical’s dance captain assistant, while his wife, Amelia will be the choreographer.
Other recognizable tunes include “Slap That Bass,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Embraceable You.”
Casting for the musical calls for at least six good dancers and two good male dancers for the chorus, Brame said, with the male and female leads also needing to be competent in dancing skills.
“For the primary dancers, they need to have pretty significant experience,” Brame explained, which would consist of multiple years in a studio-type environment, including tap/footwork.
“Crazy For You” includes a variety of dance styles, Brame said, but tap is the predominate principle.
“The show is heavy in tap, but has quite a bit of jazz and ballroom styles as well,” he said.
And for those who have dreamed of performing as a Radio City Rockette, “Crazy For You” has lots of “kick lines” within the production, Brame said.
No formal dance training? No worries.
Brame said, “there is also room for quite a few chorus members who have limited dance experience, or who can pick up some movement.”
