High temps, humidity lead to heat advisory

The combination of high temperatures and relatively high humidity has put the Vicksburg/Warren County area under another heat advisory, Emergency Management Director John Elfer said.
According to the National Weather Service, most of the state is under a high heat advisory with temperatures predicted to be from 96 to 98 degrees with heat indexes from 106 to 110 degrees.
The cause of the high heat is an upper level high pressure system extending from the Gulf north to the Great Plains, meteorologist Shannon Helfern said. She said high humidity in the southern areas is a major contributor to the high heat indexes. She said temperatures are expected to begin dropping over the weekend, with the possibility of some highs in the upper 80s Monday, but return to the low 90s later in the week.
“We also have a better chance for precipitation next week, which should keep the heat down,” she said.
“People need to do their best to stay out of the heat,” Elfer said. “Take breaks, stay hydrated and don’t do any strenuous activity.” He said one way to stay hydrated is to mix drinks containing electrolytes, like Gatorade and Powerade, with water to cut down the sodium in the drinks. “About one-half water and one-half Gatorade (or Powerade) seems to work well,” he said.
