A Vicksburg woman has been convicted of manslaughter after a three-day trial in Warren County Circuit Court, District Attorney Ricky Smith said.

Annette Scott, 50, was initially charged with murder in the June 13, 2011, stabbing death of her boyfriend, Michael Terrence Smith, 51, during an argument at their home on a side street off Avenue D between Washington and Drummond streets.

Ricky Smith said sentencing is set for Aug. 11 in Circuit Court.

The trial was the second for Scott, Ricky Smith said, adding the first was in June 2013, and the charge since then had been changed from murder to passionate manslaughter.

“Her first trial ended in a hung jury, and we knew we were going to try her again. It was a matter of getting a trial date. There had been a lot of continuances,” he said.

Police were called to Michael Terrence Smith’s house about 10:07 p.m. June 13, 2011, and arrived to find that he had been stabbed at least twice in the chest after the argument turned physical. Officers recovered a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.

A police department spokesman at the time said police records going back five years did not indicate a history of domestic abuse or incidents, but Scott had several previous misdemeanor arrests including one for simple assault, he said. No previous records were found on Michael Terrence Smith.
