Saturday, Aug. 12, participants will walk across the Old Highway 80 bridge to raise awareness for ANCOP, which stands for Answering the Cry of the Poor, a Catholic non-profit organization.
The walk across the bridge is one of similar walks that will be taking place throughout the country at the same time to raise awareness for the organization.
ANCOP supports education efforts in the Philippines and also provides assistance to disaster areas and community development programs. This is the third year the walk has taken place in Vicksburg.
“The money raised, will fund the schooling of students particularly in the Philippines,” event organizer Zeny Meer said. “We are using it to support people who have been in disasters. Last year, Mississippi was given a share for the tornado that hit the area near Columbus. We gave a share to the Diocese of Jackson.”
The walk will start at 8 a.m. on the Vicksburg side of the bridge and participants will walk across to Louisiana before returning to Vicksburg, about a three-mile loop. The walk costs $15 for adults and $10 for those under the age of 17. The registration fee includes a t-shirt. Meer said they are expecting about 50 participants.
“It is faith in action. Individuals and groups participate in the walk, generously giving donations or helping solicit funds for ANCOP,” Meer said in a release about the event. “Kids, youth, adults and seniors join together to walk for the poor and rally the public to support the cause.”
