Donations leaving on Friday

Donations for Hurricane Harvey relief organized by the United Way of West-Central Mississippi and the Randy J. Naylor Foundation will be headed to the Houston area Friday, but there’s still time for local businesses and organizations to assist victims of the storm that flooded a good portion of south Texas.

A tractor-trailer filled with donations from the community will be leaving the Vicksburg Mall on Friday bound for Houston. Organizations, individuals and businesses that have been collecting items are asked to please deliver their donations no later than 10 a.m. Friday to the former Playland location at the mall.

United Way of West-Central Mississippi Executive Director Michele Connelly said the 18-wheeler from Miller Transportation Services plans to leave at noon Friday.

“We are making plans to deliver all items to Dobie High School — currently serving as a shelter and a distribution center for those who are living in the affected area,” Connelly said. “I would like to thank everyone for their extreme generosity as our community has come together to support those who were affected by the hurricane/flooding in Texas.”

The United Way will also have volunteers picking up donations today and Thursday from donation sites that have notified the UW to pick up. Those who are unable to deliver their donations on Friday are asked to call the UW office at 601-636-1733 and make arrangements to have your items picked up on Thursday.

If individuals would like to make a monetary donation, the United Way is accepting donations either online (unitedwayvicksburg.org/Houston) or checks payable to the United Way, as well as cash.
