The paving project will be done within the existing right of way, and traffic will be guided by flagmen onto one lane. The work is expected to be completed Dec. 31.

The work is part of a Corps levee project that began in 2013 to raise the levees and add seepage berms to address some concerns about the river seeping, or trying to cut under the levee at high water periods during floods.

The levee improvement work is being performed by Carter’s Contracting Services Inc. and the paving work is being performed by Riley Bridge Company.

The paving asphalt is being provided by APAC of Mississippi, which has a plant in Vicksburg, and will be laid in three lifts, or sections. When the paving is completed, a crushed stone layer will be laid on the shoulder for stabilization and to prevent runoff.

Lane striping will be the final step in the project.
