Landowner wants bus turnarounds repaired

At Thursday’s meeting of the Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees, the board approved a motion to allow superintendent Chad Shealy to petition the Warren County Board of Supervisors to repair four private roads the district uses as bus turnarounds.
“We got a letter from one of the landowners that has some land and they were asking that we help to repair the turnaround for the buses,” Shealy said. “By law, we request that from the board of supervisors.”
Shealy said the four turnarounds are dirt roads that have been used by VWSD for a long time in order to pick up and drop-off children.
“What will happen is the landowner will have a private road and instead of making the children walk all the way to the paved road, they will let us bring the buses in and do a turnaround,” Shealy said. “We’ve got a couple spots that we’ve done this for.”
If they agree to make the repairs, the board of supervisors would be responsible for covering the costs of the project.
“What happens is the school district has the authority to request that the board of supervisors maintain certain school bus turnarounds on private roadways,” VWSD board of trustees attorney Briggs Hopson said. “There are certain conditions and we have to get everything together to submit to the board of supervisors, but based on those condition the board of supervisors in its discretion can maintain those roadways.”
Shealy said similar agreements have been passed before by the board of supervisors.
