Grey skies and the threat of rain may have kept some runners away, but the nearly 90 participants who came out to Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center’s second annual Turkey Trot Saturday morning were treated to cool fall temperatures and a competitive race.

Runners and walkers started on Monroe Street behind Mutual Credit Union shortly after 8 a.m. and made their way along the 5K course, which traversed through downtown.

The competitive race was followed by a one-mile fun run for kids.

“I think we had a great event,” Rebecca Busby, director of Jacob’s Ladder, said. “The weather has been perfect. We had a great amount of volunteers and everything is falling in place nicely.”

Busby said the number of participants was down slightly from last year’s race, but they were still happy with the results.

“Numbers are a little off, but we felt like there are some extenuating factors such as the late ball game last night, threat of rain this morning, but we still had a really good time,” she said.

The top finishers were awarded with medals painted by Jacob’s Ladder students during their ceramics class. They were also selling Christmas ornaments that had been hand painted.

“For Jacob’s Ladder, this brings in extra fundraising for us,” Busby said. “We have a couple projects in the works. Our ceramic project is always in need of funding and we are thinking about the future, whether we need to expand. These funds go to help with that.”

Runners said they enjoyed the chance to support Jacob’s Ladder and were happy the projected rain stayed away.

“It was a good race the weather was nice,” Karen Bourne said. “It (Jacob’s Ladder) is a great organization. I work with special needs children, I am a speech pathologist in town, and they do great work at Jacob’s Ladder and I couldn’t help but support them.”

Jacob’s Ladder is a non-profit school for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
