Daisy Firth Purvis Tanner

Daisy Firth Purvis Tanner, 85, of Vicksburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, following a lengthy illness.

Daisy was born March 20, 1932, in Belzoni, Mississippi, to John Dansby Purvis and Daisy Firth Purvis. She married the love of her life, Aubrey Lee “Buck” Tanner on Sept. 2, 1950, and they recently celebrated 67 years of marriage.

Daisy is preceded in death by her parents, John and Daisy Purvis; her sister, Eva Fleming and brother, John “Jack” Purvis Jr., and two great-grandchildren, John Patrick Southerland and Lauren Olivia Southerland.

Daisy is survived by her husband, Buck; one daughter, Marcie Southerland; and one son, Douglas (Kathy) Tanner; grandchildren, Lee Ann (Chad) Stuart, Douglas Matthew (Trisha) Southerland, Branan Patrick (Brooke) Southerland, Bridgett (Chris) Satcher, Shane Hoffman, Heath (Deanna) Purvis; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her nieces, JoAnn Jones and Margie Fleming, her nephews, Tim McKibben, John Purvis and Jimmy Purvis; her sisters-in-law, Carole Wood and Jean Crocker.

Daisy lived in Belzoni and graduated from Belzoni High School. She and Buck lived in Belzoni for many years, and then in 1969 they moved to Vicksburg, where they both worked for Zales Jewelers in Battlefield Mall. They both owned and operated A.L. Tanner Jewelers in Pemberton Mall from 1982 until December 2016.

Daisy adored her family and spent her life giving to each and every one of them in every way. She loved her church, Hawkins Street United Methodist Church, and her church family.

She loved working in the jewelry store and loved her customers who were like members of her family. Daisy was known by so many both young and old alike as “Nanny”.

The visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at Glenwood Funeral Home.

The Celebration of Life Service for Daisy will be held at Hawkins Street United Methodist Church in Vicksburg the following day at noon with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Sally Bevel will officiate. Pallbearers are Chad Stuart, Heath Purvis, Jacob Hoffman, Chris Satcher, Randy Holder and Jim Cole.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hawkins Street United Methodist Church, 3736 Halls Ferry Road, Vicksburg, Ms, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
