Thursday, the Salvation Army made Christmas brighter for more than 400 Warren County residents when its volunteers handed out, and in some cases delivered, Angel Tree packages to 348 children and 105 senior citizens.

The Angel Tree program has been an annual program for this area for many years and reached many children and adults who otherwise might not have anything for Christmas. But it is not the only community-based organization that has helped area children and families and children in other lands.

Every Christmas, many residents in Vicksburg and Warren County band together to help people who otherwise may have no Christmas at all.

Saturday, Mountain of Faith Ministries distributed 1,785 backpacks containing gifts and treats for children ages 2 to 14. Also on Saturday, members of Cub Scout Pack 221 handed out gifts to residents at the Aeolian Apartments.

Thursday night, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace gave away bicycles and gifts to children, and Jammin’ for the kids observed its 20th year of raising money to buy gifts for children whose parents are in jail.

Workers at the Environmental Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center bought toys that went to the Salvation Army to help with Angel Tree. In November, members of several churches in the county participated in Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide ministry that sends gift boxes to children in other countries.

These are a few examples of how people in our community get together to help others in need at Christmas. Some work together in fundraisers to get the necessary money to help others, sometimes dipping into their own pockets to do so. Many also take time from their busy schedules to volunteer to pack boxes and bags with gifts, clothing and other items, and help load vehicles or make deliveries to those in need who may not be able to get out and get the items set aside for them.

It has been said that Mississippians are among the most generous people in the United States, and always ready to help others. Our community organizations consistently prove they are always willing help their fellow man.

During Christmas, they and the residents of Vicksburg and Warren County go beyond the call of duty to ensure those who otherwise wouldn’t have a good Christmas.
