Byron Galvin broke out as a star for Hinds Community College this season, and his work did not go unnoticed on the national level.
The Hinds defender and former Warren Central star was selected as an honorable mention All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association earlier this week.
Galvin finished this season with 71 total tackles, and led the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges with six interceptions. He ranked fourth in the country in interceptions, and returned two of them for touchdowns.
Galvin played a hybrid safety and linebacker position. He was a linebacker on the NJCAA’s All-America team, but had earned All-Region 23 and All-State honors as a defensive back. He was also named the MACJC South Division MVP.
Galvin did not sign with the first wave of junior college players on national signing day on Wednesday. He is expected to sign with a four-year school in the spring.
Galvin wasn’t the only Hinds player to earn All-America status. Defensive lineman Ivin White made the NJCAA’s second team.
Other Mississippi players recognized were:
• Itawamba Community College wide receiver Terry Williams on the first team offense and quarterback Dan Williams on the second team offense.
• Northwest Mississippi defensive lineman Hal Northern on the first-team defense, and offensive lineman Damien Lewis on the second team offense.
• Mississippi Gulf Coast running back DeAndre Torrey on the second-team offense.
• East Mississippi defensive back Duke Upshaw on the first-team defense and kicker Taylor Crabtree on the honorable mention special teams.
• Copiah-Lincoln offensive lineman Elbert Watson on the honorable mention offense.
• Coahoma linebacker Cecil Cherry on the honorable mention defense.
