Lady Vikes grind up Greenville

The Warren Central Lady Vikes made short work of Greenville on Saturday — so short, in fact, that they gathered afterward for an impromptu doubleheader.
Katelyn Morson scored two goals, including one just 12 seconds into the game, and Natalie Greer also scored twice as Warren Central routed Greenville 8-0.
Each half was shortened to 20 minutes instead of the usual 40 after Warren Central scored four goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Since they hadn’t been able to practice all week because of bad weather, coach Jay Madison called for an intrasquad scrimmage afterward to shake some of the rust off before Monday’s division showdown with Clinton.
“We’re going to play our own scrimmage game, just because we’ve got Sunday to rest and then Clinton on Monday, so we’re going to work on some things,” Madison said. “They’re (Greenville) a district opponent, so it’s a game you have to play. You’re trying not to embarrass them if that’s the way it is and get through it with nobody hurt and move on.”
The Lady Vikes (9-6, 1-0 Division 4-6A) took the opening kickoff and zipped down the field. Morson went untouched into the goal box and easily kicked the ball past Greenville keeper Jakayla Bailey for a 1-0 lead 12 seconds into the game.
Taylor Smith scored about a minute later and Morson got her second goal a minute after that to make it 3-0.
“That was quick for any team,” Smith said.
Greer tallied two goals in the 10th and 14th minutes, and Maddie Watkins scored in the 17th for a 6-0 lead at halftime. Laney Smith and Jayda Griffin netted goals in the second half to round out the scoring as the Lady Vikes turned their attention toward a much bigger challenge on Monday.
They’ll travel to play Clinton (10-8-1, 0-0) at 5:30 p.m.for the Division 4-6A title. The winner gets a home game in the first round of the playoffs, but it’s worth a lot more than that for the Lady Vikes.
Clinton has won 25 consecutive division games since the start of the 2010-11 season and beat Warren Central 1-0 last season. Madison feels like the gap between the teams has narrowed, and now the Lady Vikes are ready to rise up.
“We’re 1-0 last year on a penalty kick, so they know we’re close. They know we’re knocking,” Madison said. “I’m excited about this team. This team is the best cohesive team I’ve had in the last three years. It’s going to be a tough game. I think the girls know that, but I think Clinton knows that too, and that’s not the way it used to be. It used to be one they’d mark off on their calendar and off they go to the first round of the playoffs.”

Warren Central seniors Braylen Greer and Sean Dixon scored two goals apiece on senior day, and the Vikings cruised to an easy win over division rival Greenville.
All of the goals by Greer and Dixon came in the first half — which was shortened to 30 minutes once the game got out of hand — as Warren Central (14-3-2) took a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Dixon scored first, in the fourth minute, and then Greer got one on a breakaway in the 11th minute. Their second goals came off assists from each other in the 15th and 19th minutes.
Brandon Fischer, Graham Tweedle and Dequarian Buck netted goals in the second half as the Vikings rotated in substitutes and junior varsity players.
Warren Central outshot Clinton 24-3. Greenville keeper Keenan Johnson made 12 saves.
“It was pretty fun. We really wanted Raymond (Rimmey) and Brandon to get a goal. I wasn’t able to get Raymond one, but we got Brandon a goal,” Dixon said.
(B) Ridgeland 12, Vicksburg 0
One night after a competitive loss to division rival Ridgeland, the Vicksburg Gators took a lopsided defeat in the second half of a home-and-home series.
Ridgeland won 7-3 in Friday’s game at Memorial Stadium. Sam Newton scored two goals and fellow sophomore Bryan Cochran had one for the Gators.
