The St. Aloysius Flashes didn’t get everything they were looking for Monday against Park Place Christian, but they did get enough.
Ryan Theriot scored four goals, Jack Dowe scored one and assisted on three others, and the Flashes beat Park Place 6-3 to get back in the win column and a needed confidence boost heading into Wednesday’s rematch with four-time defending MAIS Class AAA champion Central Hinds.
“I left a few out there. I’m disappointed, but we got the ‘W’ so that’s all that matters,” said Theriot, who missed shots on several breakaway chances in addition to his four goals. “We can pick up a few more things we can work on tomorrow and get ready for Central Hinds. We got away from our game and let the other team and the refs get to us. We’ve just got to work better together and keep our heads.”
Central Hinds beat St. Al 8-0 last week for its 65th consecutive victory. It will come to Balzli Field Wednesday at 5 p.m. for round two, and the Flashes were looking forward to giving a better showing than the first time.
“It embarrassed me a lot. I’ve never been beaten that bad in my whole life. We’re going to bring everything,” Dowe said.
Dowe ripped a left-footed shot across his body and into the right side of the net for the game’s first goal seven minutes in, then set up Theriot for goals in the 16th and 27th minutes.
Park Place responded with a goal by Adam Roberson in the 28th, but Theriot chased down a loose ball that had slipped through the defense and scored on a breakaway in the 37th to give the Flashes a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Three minutes into the second half, Dowe fed a pass ahead to Theriot for another breakaway goal and a 5-1 lead.
Park Place (6-4) got second-half goals from Connor Stewart and Roberson but St. Al tacked on one more by Kieran Theriot and kept the Crusaders at bay.
St. Al outshot Park Place 19-7 in the game.
“It was a decent game. We could have played a lot better, but we didn’t play bad. We beat them,” Dowe said.
