Margaritaville, bowling alley moving forward but slowly

Work continues on two recreation-related projects in Vicksburg with one project setting an early spring opening and the other’s opening remains undetermined.

While officials with the Margaritaville Resort at the site of the former Grand Station Casino are projecting an April grand opening, officials for the Fun Lanes bowling alley being built in the former Goody’s clothing store location in the Vicksburg Mall said they have delayed a grand opening pending completion of the alley’s 16 lanes.

“We’re still laying the bowling lanes in; it’s taking its time,” said Patrick Belden, operations manager for the bowling alley. “It’s a lot of wood, and they have to be within so many millimeters of level, so it takes time getting everything right.”

He said the restaurant and bar for the bowling alley are “pretty much all done. We’re just waiting on the bowling alley people to finish so we can start laying carpet and put in decorations. We’re about 90 percent complete.”

Vicksburg Hotel LLC representative Greg Stewart said work continues at the hotel site, and the company expects to start work on the pool area in about three weeks. He said a meeting on the project is planned for Thursday.

“We’re still there; they’re (the workers) there,” he said. “The lower building (on Levee Street) is completely repainted on the outside.”

City community development director Victor Gray-Lewis said workers are doing interior work at the hotel, adding the company is expected to soon get its permits to build the pool.

The lower half of the resort will contain resorts the restaurants and the family entertainment center, which company officials said will include the latest in video and electronic games and other activities.

Company representatives filed plans for the pool with the community development department in August.

According to the plans, the pool with a waterslide will be built on the top level of the adjacent parking deck just north of the hotel, and will feature different depths of 3, 4 and 5 feet with “splashdown” area for the slide, and a splash pad and children’s area in the center of the pool. The waterslide takes people through a figure 8 as they move toward the pool.
