Pondering soccer and our ties to the Super Bowl

This is one of those weeks where there are a hundred thoughts in my head — most of them incoherent, which makes it hard to pull it together into a column. So we’ll try to string as many of them together as we can.
Enjoy some rambling sports musings. And pudding. Pudding is always good:
• Warren Central’s boys’ soccer team’s victory over Clinton on Monday was one for the ages. It was 0-0 through 100 minutes of regulation and overtime, but never boring. There were enough scoring chances and intensity to entertain even the biggest anti-soccer zealot. Definitely one of the most entertaining games — in any sport — that I’ve seen.
And congratulations to the Vikings. It had been eight years since they’d beaten Clinton and won a division title, and the joy and relief on their faces was fun to see.
Skol, Vikings.
• Central Hinds’s boys’ soccer team beat St. Aloysius 3-1 on Wednesday for its 66th consecutive victory. The Cougars have won the last four MAIS Class AAA championships and appear headed toward No. 5.
Doing anything successfully 66 times in a row is an incredible accomplishment, whether it’s winning soccer games or playing with one of those rubber balls on a paddle. Kudos to the Cougars.
St. Al is likely to get another shot at them in the playoffs, though. The Flashes have a very good team and program — they reached the state semifinals last season — and I know their players are now rooting for Central Hinds so the streak will still be intact when round three of the rivalry rolls around.
• Speaking of soccer, the Mississippi High School Activities Association has extended the regular season an extra week because of the number of postponed games statewide. The playoffs will now begin on Feb. 5. Warren Central and Vicksburg have both added or are looking to add a couple of games next week.
• The Patriots are back in the Super Bowl. So is former Vicksburg High star Malcolm Butler, one of their starting cornerbacks. I’m happy for Malcolm. He’s a true American success story, proof that hard work and perseverance can allow you to achieve your dreams.
I’m also a Philadelphia Eagles fan who hasn’t seen them win a championship in my lifetime. So, with all due respect to Malcolm and his fans, I hope the Patriots crash and burn next Sunday. He can have a good game as long as the Eagles win — preferably by about 40 points.
