Girl Scout cookies have arrived, and for those who did not pre-order, booth sales are scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 11.

“Booth sales will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at Kroger and Wal-Mart,” troop leader for troop 6150 Anne Mullins said.

In January, Girl Scouts contacted family, friends and neighbors for preorders, Mullins said, but typically extra boxes are also purchased for booth sales.

In times past, Mullins said, Girl Scouts would go door-to-door taking pre-orders, but because of today’s culture, scouts usually just contact people they know. Nonetheless, Girl Scouts can still reach out to the general public thanks to booth sales.

“This is now where the kids can interact with people they do not know, under a controlled, parent involved environment,” Mullins said.

In addition to pre-orders, Mullins said, most Girl Scouts and troop leaders will order extra boxes of cookies to sell.

“We order a specific amount, however much we can sell or hope to sell for booth sales,” Mullins said.

And after the booth sales end, if there are any left over boxes, Girl Scouts will continue selling cookies until they are sold out.

Cookies are also available for purchase from individual Girl Scouts or Girl Scout leaders if you get in touch with one, Mullins said.

This year’s cookies include the Thin Mints, a round, mint-flavored cookie with a chocolate coating; Samoas, a caramel and toasted coconut-covered cookie; Tagalongs, a chocolate covered peanut butter cookie; Trefoils, a shortbread cookie; Do-si-dos, a peanut butter sandwich cookie; Savannah Smiles, a lemon cookie; S’mores, a crunchy graham sandwich cookie with creamy chocolate and marshmallowy filling and Toffee tastic, a gluten-free butter cookie with crunchy toffee bits.

The cost for each box of cookies is $4, Mullins said, except for the Toffee tactics and S’mores, which are the newer cookies that scouts have been selling.

These each sell for $5 a box.

“We have had the gluten free cookie for about two years,” she said, and S’mores were introduced last year.

Also, this will be the last year the Savannah Smiles cookies will be sold, Mullins said.

“Next year we will introduce a new lemon cookie,” she said.

Girl Scout cookies can last up to one year if frozen, Mullins said.

Proceeds from cookie sales stay with each individual troop, Mullins said, but how it is used within each troop may vary.

Mullins said the proceeds from Troop 6150 goes towards registration fees that are due each year to the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi Council, trips the troop goes on, summer camps and supplies used at meetings — “All of our Girl Scout activities,” she said.

To date there are more than 1.8 million girls involved with Girl Scouts and 800,000 Girl Scout leaders. Vicksburg is home to six Girl Scout troops, five of which are selling cookies, Mullins said.
