READER: why not have school bond vote in upcoming elections?

Published 6:31 pm Saturday, February 24, 2018

To the editor:

The Vicksburg Warren School District is planning a special election March 27 to vote on a bond issue to repair and upgrade many of our schools. To reduce the cost of the election, they are restricting polling to two very inconvenient locations, Warren Central High School and Vicksburg High School. They will be asking voters from Eagle Lake and the area around International Paper to come into Vicksburg High School to vote.

Will they have reserved parking for voters or will the voters be competing for parking with the teachers and students?

If they really want to save on election costs, why not piggy their question on another upcoming election. There will be primary election soon to determine candidates for congressional seats and while there will be two ballots, the bond issue could be placed on both ballots.

There will also be a general election in November where the issue could be decided.

This issue, while important, is not so pressing that it couldn’t be decided during a regular election, minimizing voter confusion.
