The Metro Male Chorus and the Mississippi Boychoir will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church.

Prior to the afternoon performance, the boychoir will also sing one song as a prelude during the morning service at the First Presbyterian Church, 1501 Cherry St. and then they will walk down to First Baptist and sing two songs in their morning service, Mississippi Boychoir choral director Nancy Robertson said.

“We will invite everyone to come to our afternoon concert by singing a little song to whet their musical appetite,” Robertson said.

The history of boychoirs dates back 15 centuries, when boys would sing in the great cathedrals of Western Europe, and now for more than 20 years, Mississippi has supported a state group that replicates this 1,500-year-old boychoir tradition.

Currently, auditions are being held for the Mississippi Boychoir, and Robertson encouraged anyone interested to try out.

“There is a limited number of spots, but the sky is the limit,” she said.

“We would love to recruit enough singers to have a Training Choir and a Concert Choir here in Vicksburg like we do in Jackson.”

Members of the Vicksburg branch meet every Monday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity Conservatory of the Fine Arts.

Members of the Jackson branch meet every Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church in Jackson, and both groups combine to meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. one Saturday each month.
