The annual Relay for Life event in Warren County will have a new location this year.

The event will take place at Warren Central High School starting Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. The Relay for Life had been held at Vicksburg High School’s track in previous years, but event organizers decided to make the move to Warren Central for 2018.

“We moved to Warren Central so we can switch it around some instead of just doing at Vicksburg High School,” event organizer Melissa Williams said.

The event currently has 14 teams signed up, but they are looking for more teams to take part to help reach the fundraising goal of $50,000. Teams can sign-up at main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLCY18SOR?pg=entry&fr_id=87572.

Luminaries in memory of love ones who have died from cancer or in honor of those currently battling the disease can be bought at the link.

Williams said the theme for this year’s event is “Stayin Alive,” and will be represented by going full 1970s with disco balls and tie-dye.

The theme was chosen by Mutual Credit Union because their team raised the most money last year.

“Every camp site will implement that theme within their site,” Williams said.

The opening ceremonies will kick-off the event at 7 p.m. that Friday and then throughout the night there will be food, games and music as participants walk along the track to help raise money for cancer research.

Relay for Life started in 1985 with a single person walking to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, the annual event has spread to 27 countries and raised more than $5 billion for cancer research.

The opening ceremonies are followed by a survivors lap where those who have battled cancer and won kick-off the night’s event by walking the first lap. They’ll then be joined by the caregivers before the members of the participating team take to the track and walk throughout the night.
